Samuel Beckett: An Annotated Bibliography

From samuel-beckett.info

This bibliography is in no way complete, or even exhaustive, nor is it a list of personal favorites. My primary goal in creating it is to provide detailed content information for books by and about Samuel Beckett, information that is not readily available online.

Contents

Editions

Beckett's publishing history is a complicated one, involving different publishers for French and English editions, for American and British editions in English, and for English prose and dramatic works in Britain. At the present time, Beckett's works are pubished in France by Les Éditions de Minuit, in the United Kingdom by Faber and Faber, and in the United States by Grove Press. From the 1950s until 2007, John Calder was the publisher of the non-dramatic works in the U.K. The following listings consist primarily of the Grove Press and John Calder editions readily available in the United States, and especially the volumes containing scholarly editions and collections of multiple works. For a detailed publication history of individual works, consult The Grove Companion to Samuel Beckett (or, in the U.K., The Faber Companion to Samuel Beckett,) by C.J. Ackerley and S.E. Gontarski.

Translations by Beckett

Beckett undertook translations of other author's works only when he was in need of money. The selection of the authors and the particular works he translated was therefore not his own, and should not necessarily be taken as evidence of any particular affection for the authors or the works on Beckett's part.

Friedman, Alan Warren, ed. Beckett in Black and Red: The Translations for Nancy Cunard's Negro (1934). Lexington: The University Press of Kentucky, 2000.

Paz, Octavio, compiled by. Mexican Poetry: An Anthology. New York: Grove Press, 1985.

Pinget, Robert. The Old Tune: Beckett Short No. 7. London: John Calder, 1999.

In addition to these volumes, Beckett's translations of other author's works can be found in Collected Poems in English and French and Collected Poems 1930-1978.
